Local wedding photographer Colleen Kelly reached out to Mike for a redesign of her online portfolio. Colleen wanted to tighten up the focus, modernize the look and feel, and most importantly be able to easily update the website herself.

After interrogating Colleen for tips on raising ducks, Mike got to work getting a feel for Colleen's photography work and trying to get a sense of what inspired her. After a few iterations, they landed on a clean, modern black and white grid based design accented by classic serif typography to give the website a timeless feel.

Really, Mike had it easy, since Colleen's photography and writing took center stage. Mike just had to deliver photos in a unique, yet usable layout. Working together, Mike and Colleen landed on the idea of Galleries and Selected work.  From his prior experience building content management systems, Mike's learned that if it's hard to use, it won't be used. Mike set to work building a content management system that was easy to use and built around Galleries and Selected Work. Colleen didn't need to add pages or posts or featured images, instead she uploaded photos to "Galleries" and created new "Featured Works". 

Most importantly, Mike didn't want Colleen to have to worry about sizing her photography or becoming a graphic designer to make the site look great. Instead, Colleen just needed to focus on uploading great photos to the content management system and let the website take care of the rest.

Mike built a variety of Gallery layouts for Colleen to use in her featured work including multiple grids, stacks, and carousels. Mike built a styleguide featuring each of the grids for Colleen using her photography so she would be able to preview each layout in the context of her work.
